Writing a letter to yourself

I love writing in general, not just typing, I enjoy doing the pen-on-paper exercise. So, it’s not surprising to know that I was one of the biggest fan of letter writing – the one that involve a mail box and all that.

But for a while now, the world has shifted to exchanging e-mails and I miss those days when I looked forward to receiving a letter. The anticipation always gave me a thrill, same with eventually receiving the letter and reading all those penned words addressed to me.

What I missed most of all, was the fun (and sometimes serious) exercise of writing letters to myself. It was, and still is somewhat, one of the ways that help me get through my darkest days. It was my own way of helping myself heal. I would write something funny that made me laugh and laugh.

Then I’d post it to my home address and it’d take about 2 days to deliver. Receiving and rereading the letter will not only remind me of the moment that I wrote this, but also give me a fresh laugh over the letter’s content. It always felt so good to have that belly laugh. It helped me to be able to relax within myself and enjoy my day.

This I did on regular basis. It’s like having a best friend to talk to and laugh with. In the end, it helps you love yourself more.

I also enjoyed writing to my loved ones. I remember when I moved out of my parents’ home, which was very difficult for me, but I was determine to make it out on my own. I started to write letters to my parents, sharing details of how my day went. I would write to them every single day, but when I got a little busy I’d write weekly, giving me so much to write about. My mum would always reply my letters and it soon because a routine for me.

A routine I loved doing.

One of my friends who lives in Adelaide – Australia, and I used to write to each other when we were younger, sharing about our lives. At some point, we lost contact, then few years later we found each other again and never lost contact since.

I also had other friends I wrote to, but sadly, I’ve been unable to find them since we lost touch. Although, I remember the times when they were always telling of how they look forward to my funny happy letters every time.

When I met my partner 7 years ago, I used to write letters to him too. He said he felt strange that someone would write him a letter. But, I kept writing to him each week till he got used to it and soon began to look forward to my letters and surprise parcels.

I loved it. I enjoyed making people feel happy and to have something to look forward to. It’s one of the reasons I love blogging too. It is one of my greatest passions to write and share my knowledge with others.

Some years later, while mum was doing a clean out at her place, she packed all the letters I’ve written to her and arranged them in a lovely box. Mum had this BIG box of letters for me, and she said to me “This is for you”

When I opened the box and saw all those letters, tears welled up in my eyes. I could hardly believe it, all those years and mum kept the letters. I opened a couple and was flooded with memories of those times – the good, the bad. But I embraced all. Some times it’s good to recall the bad times, not to relive the pain, but just to reflect on how far you’ve gone in life.

I still have the box, though I haven’t gone through all the letters because they are so many. But I keep them for those days when I just need to remember. For now, I document my day by writing in my journal which is another outlet for me and a chance to write to myself.

Back in the olden days they didn’t have computers to receive emails, they had letters and telegrams. That is how they got their messages across. Many people today still love the old tradition of receiving a letter in the mail box. For one, I do and I’d like you to try it too.

My challenge for you today, is to write a letter and then post it to yourself. You might be wondering what you’ll write about, our minds tend to go blank with what words to start with. You just have to relax and let it flow out of you.

If you have never written a hand-written a letter to someone or to yourself, this is your chance to try. Do it and see how you feel when you receive the letter. It will lift your spirits up.

Some ideas on what you can start with;

  • write about your day, how you felt or what you did that day.
  • write about your week.
  • write about your pet.

There is so much you can write about, it doesn’t matter if it’s positive or negative just write it and post it to yourself. Ensure you don’t hold back on posting it.

Have you ever hand written a letter to someone? What about writing yourself a hand-written letter?

If so share your experience in the comment section at the bottom of the blogpost. I’d love to read them.

Remember, I believe in you.

Much love,

Ronni xx

I went on an outdoor weeklong adventure thing with a few of the seniors from a camp I went to, One night we had a solo night, where the one task we had been given was to write ourselves a letter that they would mail us a year later. It was extremely emotional rereading that letter a year later. This post has actually encouraged me to do this at-least yearly, so every year I have a letter to read about where I was and where i wanted to be vs my current situation

Seating on my couch with a cup of coffee on the table and writing the letter brings inspiration and excitement. I learnt a new thing from your piece and that’s the aspect of posting the letter to myself. I look forward to practicing this and I will definitely come around to share my experience as well. Thank you, Ronni!
